Hobart 140 not FEEDING!!!!
Hello, I'm a newbie here. I'm 14 years old so i'm not a veteran welder but Iv'e welded with a Lincoln stick welder for a couple years and now i got a Hobart Handler 140 welder as a gift. The problem is that my brand new, out-of-the-box welder does not feed. The fan runs when turned on but the feed motor does nothing when the trigger is pulled. It doesn't click or anything. I can not pick up any juice with a voltage tester at the trigger wire plug in. Does anybody know what's wrong? Thanx in advance.

If it's brand new, take it back to where you bought it and get another one.
Sometimes, the gun trigger wires can be broken or damaged. Are the wires coming out of the gun connected inside the welder to the little spade terminals? Check those first and make sure you have everything connected properly.
You can check the wires from the trigger at the end of the gun for continuity with your meter. The switches in the trigger of the gun puke out sometimes too. They can on occasion come bad from the factory, but not very often.
If you can make a little jumper to go between both spade terminals where the gun wires plug in, it should activate the feed motor. If not, just take it back.

Did you hook up the ground and feed wire inside the spool /feed area?

I did not clamp the ground on to anything, do i need to just to feed wire?

READ THE DIRECTIONS!! Then read them again, being new, that is a must, but once you become a veteran welder then just a skim through the book to familiarize yourself with features is all that's needed.
Highly improbable that there isnt something wrong with the welder itself, 90% chance its something you haven't done, but if it ends up being a bad unit, return it, and I prefer my crow well done.

If it's brand new and you have the receipt there's no need to take it back to the store of purchase. In the manual there is a phone number to call if you are having problems, they will try to help diagnose the problem with you. If they can't fix the problem take it to a welding supply store and Hobart will will repair it under warranty. I have had outstanding customer service from Hobart in the past, I own both the 210mvp and the Ironman and I'm very happy with how they weld and Hobart customer service.

Welcome to the forum Shevy
and sorry to hear of your issue.I'm with the others regarding taking it back if you can't find the problem with some quick basic troubleshooting.
To answer your question, no you don't have to have the work clamp attached to anything to make the wire feed motor run and the first thing I would do is what Steve (7A749) suggested and jumper across the gun trigger plug receptacle terminals on the machine to either eliminate or identify the gun as the cause. If it still doesn't function then I would remove the housing wrapper and check for any harness plugs that may have come loose during handling and transport.
If the unit feeds by jumping the trigger plug terminals then a quick check of the gun plug terminals and continuity test across them with the trigger pulled would be in order. If anything there proves defective then I'd make a trip back to the place of purchase for an exchange.

Well, I finally took the cover off and seen what the problem was right away. A white plug with a bunch of wires was disconnected. Thanks guys.

Yeah PIE is good....Lynda put me on a diet 3 months ago so I dont get any cool cookies or cake...Not lately anyway but Im down to 230 from 245 so I guess I can deal with it for now....but if you do have any PIE or Cake send it over....Dont tell Lynda though

If it stops working again, Make sure the voltage switch is pointing at a number and not between.
The welder must have weld output before the wire will feed.
Also go ahead and call hobart, Talk to Keith or Bill ,Tell them what you found. they may have something else they want you to look at.
